Gutters in Philadelphia, PA

Gutters and downspouts sized and pitched to match the roof above, so water leaves the house instead of running down the front.

A gutter only works if it is sized and pitched for the roof feeding into it, which is something that gets missed constantly on row homes where one gutter run has to handle water coming off a flat roof, a pitched section, and sometimes a neighbor's runoff too. Undersized gutters overflow in a hard rain no matter how clean they are, and that water ends up running down the face of the house instead of through the downspout.

We start by looking at the roof itself, its size, its pitch, and where the water actually wants to go, before picking gutter size and downspout placement. Pitch matters as much as size. A gutter hung level or sloped backward toward the house holds standing water, sags over time, and pulls fasteners loose from the fascia, which shows up a couple years later as a gutter hanging visibly crooked.

Aluminum is what most homes use, formed as one continuous piece where the run allows it, since fewer joints means fewer leak points. Downspouts matter as much as the gutter itself. If they dump straight against the foundation, that water is a big part of why basements in this city stay damp, so we route them out to daylight or tie them into existing drainage where one is already there.

How it goes

Gutters, step by step.

Gutters From the job
  1. 01

    Assess the roof

Measure roof area and check pitch to figure out how much water the gutters actually need to move.

  2. 02

    Choose size and material

Pick gutter size, aluminum gauge, and continuous versus sectional based on the run and the roof feeding it.

  3. 03

    Hang and pitch

Install gutters with a consistent slope toward the downspouts so water never sits.

  4. 04

    Set downspouts

Place downspouts where they can actually carry water away, not just off the roof edge.

  5. 05

    Route water away

Direct downspout discharge away from the foundation, into existing drainage where possible.

FAQ

Gutters questions.

Why do my gutters overflow even though they were just cleaned?

If they overflow when they are clean and empty, the problem usually is not debris, it is that they are undersized or pitched wrong for the amount of roof feeding into them. Cleaning fixes clogs, it does not fix a gutter that was never sized for the roof above it.

One continuous gutter or sections, does it matter?

One continuous gutter means fewer joints along a straight run, so fewer spots for a leak to start, which matters over a long run like the front of a row home. Sectional is still a fine option for shorter runs or awkward corners where a continuous run is not practical anyway.

Can my downspouts be causing water in my basement?

Very possibly. If a downspout empties right at the foundation instead of a few feet away or into a drain, that water has nowhere to go but down along the foundation wall, and basements in this city already deal with enough groundwater without help from the roof.

What happens to gutters here in winter?

Standing water in a poorly pitched gutter freezes, and that ice adds weight that pulls hangers loose and can back water up under the roof edge as it thaws and refreezes. A properly pitched gutter drains before it has the chance to sit and freeze in the first place.
